Dorking paid their respects to
club captain Stewart Vaughan on Tuesday night as 1,021 fans turned up to the second
benefit game against a Crystal Palace XI, watched by their manager Peter Taylor, himself
no stranger to non league football having started his illustrious career at Dartford.
With Stewart having passed away on Sunday 1 April, the game was an emotional affair, the
players and fans alike holding a 2 minute silence before the game in the centre circle,
joined by representatives of local youth sides including Dorking Girls, Brockham Badgers
and St Martins. Around 100 Marie Curie balloons were released just before the start of the
game by the youngsters containing wishes for the future from the children.
The game saw a very sharp Crytal Palace side take a first minute lead, Dalhouse scoring
from a corner. Swaibu then made it 2-0 after Dorking keeper MArk Fox, in fine form
throughout the night, could only palm away Grabban's shot. Kev Terry came close to
reducing the arrears, but Palace's team were playing some great attacking football, and
Grabban then Sweeney made it 4-0 at the interval.
The second half was a more even affair, even after Palace made it 5-0 early in the second
period, as Grabban scored from close range. Palace had chances to extend their lead, but
Dorking were themselves creating chances and a deserved consolation was scored on 77
minutes when Adrian Butler did well to shake off a defender, then score from 12 yards with
a shot across the goal.
The result was of course immaterial, with yet more money raised for Stewart's fund and
Marie Curie, and thanks go to Crystal Palace and their fans in what was a fine tribute to
Stewart's memory.
